Everyone has stressful encounters in their day-to-day lives. Some of them are more stressful than others and can trigger an intense, lasting emotional response. This can be considered a traumatic event. Experiencing trauma can impair one’s coping skills, eliminate their sense of self and safety, and create an inability to regulate their emotions.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental condition that is brought on by a traumatic event. Trauma and PTSD do not always go hand in hand. Those who have PTSD have experienced trauma, but not all who have experienced trauma have PTSD. One third of people who experience trauma also experience PTSD.

Symptoms of PTSD include:

  • Recurring flashbacks of the traumatic event
  • Reliving the event in your head
  • Dreams and nightmares surrounding the event
  • Extreme emotional reactions to things that remind you of the event

If PTSD goes untreated for too long, it can have a severe negative effect on your mental and physical health. If you have experienced a traumatic event that is having long-lasting effects on you, it may be time to seek help. These symptoms are manageable, and I am here to help you.
